If you hold your sessions on a platform that isn’t integrated with Upheal, such as SimplePractice, Doxy.me, or Google Meet, we have multiple solutions that let you hold sessions the same way while still getting all the benefits of Upheal’s notes and insights.
The two-device method in this article is a workaround, in case you're not able to use our recommended methods:
Using the in-person feature for online sessions
Please be aware that this tool wasn't designed for capturing online sessions.
What you’ll need:
You’ll need two devices. You'll hold the session on your mobile device, and capture audio with Upheal on the other device.
Your capturing device needs to be able to hear both you and your client, so during the call, use your calling device’s speakers — don't wear headphones!
Before capturing a session
Before you capture a real session, we recommend testing your audio setup and changing the settings on your capturing device (where you're running Upheal). This helps prevent unexpected technical issues and interruptions to your sessions.
How to test your setup
How to test your setup
Devices and spaces may vary, so test your recording setup before recording a real session.
Place your recording device where you’d like it to be during the session, such as near your calling device’s speakers.
Run Upheal on your capturing device.
Play some audio with speech out of your calling device’s speakers for 1-2 minutes. Then, from the position you’ll be in during sessions, speak as naturally as possible for a few moments.
End the session, and check if the session transcript picked up your speech.
If the transcript is complete and mostly accurate, that should be a good place to put your recording device.
If not, try moving the device to a different location and testing again.
Which device settings to change
Which device settings to change
If you’re using computer to capture the session:
Mute the computer’s speakers (not the microphone).
Turn off any auto-sleep or auto-hibernate features. Recording will stop if the computer sleeps.
If you’re using a phone to capture the session:
Tip: You can also use our iOS app for the two-device method.
Turn off all sounds and vibrations.
Put the phone in Do Not Disturb mode.
Turn off auto-lock. Upheal stops if your phone locks.

Capturing a session
We recommend starting Upheal on your capturing device shortly before the session to avoid interruptions or distractions during your session.
1. Starting capture
First, sign in to Upheal in a web browser on your recording device. From there, you'll choose the In-person session option from the menu or from your client's page:
From the menu, click New note, then click In-person.
From the client's page, click Start new session, then click In-person.
2. Microphone access
If you haven’t given Upheal permission to access your microphone, you’ll be prompted to do so.
3. Holding the session
Let the app run throughout the whole session to record.
4. Ending the session
When you’re finished, click End session, and the recording will stop.
The audio is added automatically to Upheal, which should take just a short while but depends on the length of the session and the speed of your internet connection. The audio is deleted after processing, unless you choose to keep it.
When processing is finished, you’ll be able to access your session notes and insights.
Alternative: Uploading recordings manually
You can still record sessions independently and upload them to Upheal manually. Read more about uploading sessions from your computer or mobile device.
